Steamed Nian Gao w/ Shredded Coconut

steamed nian gao with shredded coconut

Steamed nian gao coated in freshly shredded coconut is a super simple, easy and delicious way to serve the auspicious dessert!

This is one of my go-to ways to serve nian gao, because you literally only need two ingredients: freshly shredded coconut and salt.

Nian gao hardens when refrigerated, but steamed nian gao has a soft and chewy texture like mochi. It’s so addictive and delicious!

Steps to make steamed nian gao with coconut

Cut your nian gao into desired shape and size (the smaller the pieces, the more you can coat them in coconut!). Place on an oiled metal place, making sure that they do not touch each other. This prevents them from sticking to the plate.

Steam for 5 minutes, until the nian gao has softened. While they are still hot, coat each piece of nian gao in the shredded coconut. Serve immediately!

A little hack!

When I’m too lazy to oil the metal plate, I usually place a layer of shredded coconut on the plate and use that as an anti-sticking barrier for my nian gao! After steaming, just toss everything together until the nian gao is well coated with coconut 🙂

How to prepare shredded coconut

I learned this method of preparing shredded coconut from my 婆婆/grandma. Freshly shredded coconut can turn bad very easily, especially in a hot and humid country like Malaysia.

Mix the coconut with a little bit of salt, then steam it for 10 minutes until it is heated all the way through. Once it’s cool, it’s ready to use!

I usually steam a big batch then freeze them in divided portions. Freezing helps it to last longer, and whenever I need some shredded coconut I simply defrost them or steam them to soften.

Can I keep steamed nian gao?

Keep leftover steamed nian gao with coconut in an air-tight container in the fridge. It will remain soft for a few hours, but eventually it will harden. Simply steam again if that happens.
