Chapati is an easy and healthy, whole wheat Indian flatbread to make at home! All you need is 3 ingredients and less than 15 minutes. It pairs wonderfully with curry, and you can even enjoy it as a wrap.
If you think ordering chapati at a mamak (casual Indian restaurant) is easy and cheap, making this Indian flatbread at home is easier and cheaper! And possibly less time consuming, it literally takes less than 15 minutes.
What type of Indian flatbread is chapati?
Chapati is like the healthier version of roti canai/paratha. It’s made with atta flour, which is a type of whole wheat flour found in many supermarkets in Malaysia, like 99 Speedmart or NSK. It also contains way less oil.
Chapati is usually made with ghee, which is clarified butter. To make it vegan, I made chapati both with and without coconut oil. The dough with oil was a little softer, but there wasn’t a huge difference in taste or texture. So if you’re leaning more on the oil-free side, this recipe is great for you!
We’re using boiling water to cook the dough partially. That way you won’t need to cook it on the stove for too long and risk it burning.
This easy Indian flatbread is a great vessel for all your favourite curries and stews. You could even use these as whole wheat wraps!
